Is a DigiMC Valid in Singapore? How Employers Verify Digital MCs

Understand when a DigiMC is valid in Singapore, what employers can check, and how digital MC links, QR codes and doctor details help prevent tampering.

Employer and employee discussing DigiMC verification in Singapore

Yes, a DigiMC is valid in Singapore when it is issued by a doctor after a proper medical consultation and contains the necessary details for verification. A DigiMC is not less valid just because it is digital. The key issue is whether it came from a legitimate doctor and can be verified as an original document.

This article focuses on DigiMC information and employer verification. For a broader patient guide, read our online MC guide.

What is a DigiMC?

DigiMC is Singapore's official digital medical certificate platform. The public FAQ explains that a digital MC is the online version of a paper MC and is accessed through a unique link under the mc.gov.sg domain. Patients usually receive the link by SMS from the issuing healthcare institution.

DigiMC can be issued for different leave types, including outpatient sick leave, hospitalisation leave, maternity leave, sterilisation leave and time chit. It is designed to make MC submission easier and reduce problems with misplaced paper certificates.

What makes a DigiMC authentic?

The DigiMC FAQ explains that a doctor's signature is not required because the certificate is computer-generated. Instead, the doctor's name in block letters and the doctor's MCR number appear on the digital MC. The FAQ also advises checking that the digital MC is issued from the mc.gov.sg domain.

For printed or downloaded copies, the employer FAQ says the document contains a link and QR code that can be used to check whether the copy corresponds to the original online MC. This is why forwarding the original DigiMC link is usually better than sending a cropped screenshot.

How employers can verify a DigiMC

Employer checkWhat to doWhy it matters
Check the URLOpen the original link and confirm it is under mc.gov.sg.The official domain helps confirm the certificate has not been tampered with.
Check doctor detailsLook for the doctor's printed name and MCR number. It connects the certificate to an accountable registered doctor.
Check patient and leave datesConfirm the name, ID details where visible, issue date and leave period. It prevents payroll or attendance errors.
Use QR or link on copiesScan the QR code or enter the link from printed/downloaded copies. It verifies the copy against the original online certificate.

Can employers reject a DigiMC?

For ordinary sick leave, employers should not reject an MC merely because it came from a teleconsult or because it is digital. MOM says employers must recognise MCs issued by medical practitioners registered under the Medical Registration Act or Dental Registration Act, including MCs issued through teleconsultation.

That does not stop HR from checking that the certificate is complete, authentic and linked to the correct absence dates. Verification is reasonable. Rejecting a valid MC just because it was issued digitally is a different issue. We cover workplace disputes in more detail in our teleconsult MC employer guide.

What should patients do?

  • Forward the original DigiMC link to your employer rather than a cropped image.
  • Unlock the DigiMC as instructed and check your name and leave dates.
  • Do not edit screenshots, hide fields or alter the file.
  • Keep the SMS link until your sick leave has been processed.
  • Contact the issuing clinic if the link is broken, the dates are wrong or HR needs clarification.

What should HR teams do?

DigiMC's employer FAQ says employers can receive DigiMC links through channels such as WhatsApp, SMS or email. If the HR system needs an attachment, DigiMC can be downloaded or printed, but authenticity is strongest when the certificate is viewed online at the official domain.

HR teams should avoid asking for unnecessary medical details. For routine sick leave processing, the MC and leave dates are usually the relevant information. If a diagnosis or fitness-for-duty memo is needed for a special situation, ask the employee and issuing doctor what documentation is appropriate.

DigiMC is valid, but MCs are still clinical documents

The format does not change the clinical rule: an MC should be issued only after a proper assessment and only when medically necessary. A valid DigiMC is not a product to buy. It is documentation of the doctor's medical judgement.

DigitalHealth.sg issues DigiMCs when clinically appropriate after teleconsult assessment. If symptoms are unsafe for online care, the doctor may direct you to an in-person clinic or emergency department instead.

Yes, a DigiMC should be accepted when it is issued by a registered doctor after proper assessment. MOM says teleconsultation MCs from registered medical practitioners must be recognised under the Employment Act.

Does a DigiMC need a handwritten signature?

No. DigiMC explains that the doctor's signature is represented by the doctor's name in block letters and MCR number on the digital MC.

How do I prove my DigiMC is real?

Share the original mc.gov.sg link. For printed or downloaded versions, use the QR code or verification link to compare with the original online certificate.
