Can I Get an MC for Anxiety or Stress in Singapore?
Learn when a doctor may issue an MC for anxiety, panic, stress or burnout in Singapore, and when urgent mental health support is safer than teleconsult.
Digital Health Clinic·18 Jun 2026·8 min read
A doctor in Singapore may issue an MC for anxiety, panic symptoms, severe stress, or burnout if the doctor assesses that you are medically unfit for work or school. It is not automatic. The doctor has to evaluate your symptoms, safety, function, medical history, and whether teleconsult is enough or you need in-person mental health care.
Stress and anxiety are real health concerns. They can cause physical symptoms such as palpitations, chest tightness, dizziness, headaches, poor sleep, stomach upset and fatigue. They can also affect concentration, decision-making, mood, and daily functioning. But an MC is still a clinical decision, not a document purchased on request.
MC questionsNeed a legitimate DigiMC assessment?
MCs are issued only after a doctor decides you are medically unfit. Learn the rules, then consult if you need clinical review.
When an MC may be appropriate
An MC may be appropriate when symptoms are severe enough to impair work or school function, or when rest and short-term stabilisation are medically reasonable. Examples include acute panic symptoms, severe insomnia linked to anxiety, overwhelming stress with inability to function safely at work, or a flare of an existing anxiety condition.
The doctor will ask about symptom onset, duration, triggers, sleep, appetite, work or school impact, past mental health history, medications, alcohol or substance use, and support at home. The doctor may also ask direct safety questions about self-harm. These questions are routine and are asked to keep you safe.
When teleconsult is not enough
Teleconsult is not suitable for every mental health situation. Seek urgent help instead if there are thoughts of self-harm or suicide, risk of harm to others, confusion, hallucinations, severe chest pain, fainting, uncontrolled substance use, or an inability to stay safe. If symptoms feel like a heart attack or stroke, go to emergency care.
For ongoing anxiety, depression, trauma, or burnout, a short GP teleconsult may help with initial assessment and direction, but it is not a replacement for counselling, psychology, psychiatry, or follow-up care when those are needed.
Can employers reject an MC for anxiety?
MOM says employers must recognise MCs issued by medical practitioners registered under the Medical Registration Act or Dental Registration Act, including MCs issued through teleconsultation. The MC usually does not need to disclose detailed diagnosis unless the format or employer process requires specific information. If there is a dispute, ask the clinic how the MC can be verified without revealing unnecessary medical details.
How to prepare for the consult
- Write down your main symptoms and when they started.
- Note how symptoms affect work, school, sleep, appetite and daily function.
- List current medicines, supplements, alcohol use, and any psychiatric medications.
- Share any previous diagnoses, counsellor or psychiatrist follow-up, or hospital visits.
- Be honest about self-harm thoughts, panic attacks, or feeling unsafe.
- Stay in a private space where you can speak openly.
What help may be recommended
The doctor may recommend rest, sleep hygiene, short-term coping steps, follow-up with a GP, counselling, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, or urgent services depending on risk. Medication is not always needed. If medication is considered, the doctor will discuss benefits, side effects, interactions, and whether initiation is safe through teleconsult.
If you or someone nearby is at immediate risk, call emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. In Singapore, Samaritans of Singapore can be reached at 1-767, and the IMH Mental Health Helpline is 6389 2222.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get an MC for stress?
Possibly, if the doctor assesses that stress-related symptoms make you medically unfit for work or school. The MC is based on clinical assessment, not on request alone.
Can I get an MC for anxiety through teleconsult?
Sometimes. Mild-to-moderate anxiety symptoms may be assessed online. High-risk symptoms, self-harm thoughts, severe panic with chest pain, confusion, or inability to stay safe need urgent in-person help.
Will my MC say anxiety or stress?
MC formats vary. Many MCs certify fitness for work or school without detailed diagnosis. Ask the clinic if you are concerned about privacy or employer verification.
Can an online doctor prescribe anxiety medication?
It depends on the condition, medication type, risk, and follow-up plan. Some medicines are not suitable to start or refill casually through teleconsult, and urgent or complex cases need in-person care.
